Pediatric Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine

The Pediatric Cardiology Clinic at the Heart Center Göttingen is headed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Paul, director of the Clinic for Pediatric Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Theodor Tirilomus, director of the special unit Pediatric Heart Surgery at the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. We provide here the entire spectrum of examinations and catheter-based interventions as well as the surgical treatment of patients of all ages with congenital heart defects. The diagnostics and treatment of cardiac arrythmias are the special scientific and clinical focus of the Pediatric Heart Clinic.

Pediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinic

In the pediatric cardiology outpatient clinic, children of all ages with congenital and acquired disorders of the cardiovascular systems are examined and treated. For special diseases and therapy forms, separate specialized office hours are offered. If there is a suspected heart defect in an unborn child, our special pre-natal consultation services, in collaboration with the Clinic for Gynecology of the University Medical Center Göttingen, provides counseling for the parents and performs ultrasound examinations of the heart of the unborn child (fetal echocardiology). Our function laboratories carry out ultrasound examinations of the heart as well as stress tests, ECG and long-term ECG, pacemaker and implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) controls as well as lung function diagnostics.

Treatment of Adults with Congenital Heart Defects (ACHD)

An experienced team of pediatric and adult cardiologists provides treatment for young adults – our former pediatric cardiology patients – with congenital heart defects in a special consultation service (ACHD service) headed by Prof. Dr. Claudia Dellas. The diagnostics and treatment are carried out at the pediatric cardiac catheter laboratory or through the pediatric heart surgery. For patients with severe myocardial insufficiency, close monitoring before and after heart transplantation is also offered.

Pediatric Pulmonary and Allergology Outpatient Clinic

This outpatient clinic not only treats children with chronic lung disease but also boys and girls with allergic syndromes. In addition to lung function tests we also offer a modern bronchoscopy unit for further diagnostics.

Cardio Magnetic Resonance Imagery (MRI) and Computer Tomography (CT)

The non-invasive imaging is carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology of the UMG (director Prof. Dr. Joachim Lotz) using state-of-the-art tomographic equipment. The examinations and their planning as well as the analysis of the data are performed by a team of pediatric cardiologists, ACHD physicians and radiologists.

Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

The cardiac catherization laboratory is equipped with modern biplane digital x-ray. All cardiac catherization interventions as well as the treatment of heart valve disorders and dilation of vascular constrictions or the insertion of stents as well as the implantation of pulmonary valves are performed. A further focus is on invasive electrophysiological diagnostics and catheter ablation for cardiac arrhythmias in children or young adults with congenital heart defects. Using a three-dimensional, radiation-free diagnostic system, these examinations can be carried out almost entirely without x-ray.

Pediatric Heart Surgery

Surgery of congenital heart defects from the ages of infancy to adulthood is performed in the special unit for pediatric heart surgery headed by Prof. Dr. Theodor Tirilomis. Here, with a team of experienced senior physicians and specialists, more than 150 pediatric heart operations of all levels of difficulty are performed each year. The pre- and post-operative care of our young patients is carried out at the Clinic for Pediatric Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine. A special focus of the Heart Center Göttingen is the care of adults with congenital heart defects (ACHD). About one-third of our surgical procedures are pediatric heart operations.

Inpatient Care

Pediatric Cardiology Ward for Normal Care and Monitoring (Station 2014)

Ward 2014 has 20 beds and is equipped with modern telemetric monitoring to allow young patients complete freedom of movement. Fathers and mothers can stay at the nearby parent’s house, and for very small children, one parent is allowed to stay over at the ward with the child. ACHD children are also treated at this unit.

Intensive Care Medicine (Station 0133)

This large intensive care unit combines a neonatal and a pediatric unit serving a total of 20 beds. In the pediatric unit with 10 treatment rooms, the most seriously ill children and very young patients are closely monitored and treated. A special focus is on the early phase after heart surgery or catheter-based interventions. We also treat adult patients after such procedures. All modern intensive care medical monitoring methods and therapies, including artificial heart therapy, are available here.

Further main foci of our department include research and the teaching of Medical Students.
